018 / Bahia Blanca Municipal Market
The project for the new market in Bahía Blanca aims to redefine the building's relationship with its urban environment. Recognizing that urban complexity extends beyond the building currently housing the Bahía Blanca Market and its immediate surroundings, the possibility and need arise to convert this large block, bordered by Donado, Brown, O’Higgins, and Saavedra, not only into a more welcoming place for its immediate urban context but also into a reference point for social interaction.
This project emphasizes that the building and its relationships with its environment have become outdated. The concept of a building with an access façade facing a street like Donado and a service façade facing a civic-scale square requires a reevaluation of the notions of front and back. The new MMBB Building proposes the feasibility of a building with two fronts.
The new square is envisioned as a large platform that fundamentally integrates the existing vegetation and the soil levels of the old square. In urban terms, the main action involves establishing a new relationship between O’Higgins and Donado streets. Thus, the square becomes a meeting point, frequently hosting markets, educational activities, and cultural events.
The hall is located facing the square and takes advantage of the ramp area, understanding that the interior space of the ramp has the potential to serve as a distributor for the building. Therefore, the vehicle ramp, traditionally viewed only as a means of transport, is redefined as a characteristic element that serves as the entrance and reference point for the project.
The cultural terrace, composed of a roof supported by new and old columns, integrates sensitively with the pre-existing structures, creating a large space where exhibitions, performances, and events can take place. This space, which can be divided into two rooms, acts as a backdrop for the new square, facilitating interaction between both parts of the project.
